About the Tours

Lime Valley Mill, the former Hollinger Tannery and former Pennsylvania state senator Amos Mylin’s home were among six Lancaster County sites featured in the historic driving tour offered by the 1719 Hans Herr House in October 2011.

Lime Valley Mill, a restored 1846 grist mill along the Pequea Creek in West Lampeter Township, was open to visitors.

“This mill is one of West Lampeter’s most important historic treasures,” said local historian Henry Benner, who helped to organize the tour. “You can see all three floors and learn how grain was ground into flour.”

Benner personally introduced visitors to another 19th-century industrial site: the former Hollinger Tannery near DoubleTree Resort/Willow Valley.

“The tannery was once the largest in Lancaster County, turning thousands of animal hides into leather each year,” he said.

Less than two miles away, homeowners on Gypsy Hill Road invited visitors to step inside Senator Amos H. Mylin’s former house. “Honest Amos,” a Republican, served as a state senator from 1876 to 1892 and as the state auditor-general from 1895 to1898.

Other tour sites included the Lime Valley covered bridge and the Martin Kendig homestead near Kendig Square in Willow Street.

The self-guided tour started at the Hans Herr House. Docents met visitors at each location and participants traveled in the order and at the pace they wished.

The Hans Herr House Museum Store also sold copies of Pequea Settlement 1710: Self-Guided Tour, which includes more than forty additional sites with GPS addresses, pictures and maps of Lancaster County’s original land patents.
