Lancaster Roots 2011

This year, the 1719 Hans Herr House and Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society are collaborating to host "Lancaster Roots," a year-long schedule of concerts, classes, festivals, field trips, exhibits and sales. The complete schedule is online at www.LancasterRoots.org. Come to the 1719 Herr House to enjoy:

  • Music in the Orchard—Picnic with a great mix of local music in the shade of the oldest home in Lancaster County.
  • Heritage Trail Bike Ride & Walk—Soak up the end of summer, see picturesque sites across Lancaster County and raise funds to build a Native American longhouse.
  • Pequea Settlement Historic Driving Tour—Get a closer look at several sites within Lancaster’s first European settlement.
  • Snitz Fest—Try dozens of traditional Pennsylvania German foods and crafts.
  • Harvest Party & Square Dance—Enjoy seasonal food and games without the pressure of coming in costume!
  • Christmas Candlelight Tours—Celebrate the season with holiday traditions from Lancaster County’s first residents.

For those who learn with their hands, sign up now for:

  • Folk Arts Classes—Try your hand at Native American crafts, blacksmithing, or baking in a bake oven.
  • Girl Scout Badge Days—Brownies or Juniors earn up to three badges for completing activities related to Colonial history.
  • Summer Day Camp—Grades 3 to 5 and grades 6 to 8 experience the rigors and rewards of early American life

The 1719 Hans Herr House opens in April with Decorated Hand Towels, a special exhibit displaying decorative Pennsylvania German stitching from the mid-1800’s.

Come and experience Colonial America!
